Welcome!

This site is dedicated to the restoration of our 1960 Lyman 23 Sleeper, seen above in her "original to us" condition on March 4, 2004.  Please join us on our journey as we work to restore this classic to pristine condition.

The Story

My name is Tim Lackey, and my wife is Heidi.  Sometime in January 2004, after some months of informal banter, we made the decision to get serious about looking for a Lyman powerboat to restore.  We are sailors at heart, but there is always room in a sailor's life for a small powerboat, particularly one as classic as a Lyman.

After a brief online search, I located a few likely candidates and contacted--or attempted to contact--their owners.  The one person I heard back from is the person from whom we ended up buying our boat.

The Work Ahead
Our new boat was in generally fair condition, all things considered, but she needed a total cosmetic restoration, as well as a systems overhaul and some structural work.

As I began digging further into things, however, I discovered more and more structural issues, with a series of broken ribs, questionable planking, and related issues.  Clearly, doing this job right would require more, not less, work.

This, and a combination of other factors, not the least of which was a significant relocation to new property and a house and shop construction project that consumed time and resources--as well as our other boats, work, and whatever--has kept work on the boat to a minimum so far.

This is not what we intended, but there you have it.  Her time will come.
