Bugs (Formerly Surprise) | Wednesday, November 10, 2010

A number of items required for the new AC electric and some of the other installations arrived during my absence yesterday, allowing me to press forward with several smaller tasks.

The new AC system was simple and straightforward:  a 30-amp system with one circuit powering a single outlet in the cabin.  After some reconnaissance in the cabin, I determined the "best" location for the new panel and outlet was on the fiberglass bulkhead at the forward end of the galley on the port side, facing the port settee.  This location was convenient for future use yet out of the way, easy to access for installation and wiring, and had plenty of room for the panel and outlet.  There was no room near the existing DC panel.

To begin, I made some layout marks and then cut holes in the bulkhead to accept the small AC service panel and GFCI outlet.  At the time of this photo, earlier in the day, I'd not yet received the circuit breaker required for the panel; this breaker arrived in a later shipment, after which I installed it in the panel and wired the nearby outlet off the new breaker.

The other end of the AC system was the main 30-amp receptacle.  I chose to install this on the port side of the cockpit well.  Then, I ran 3-conductor cable between the receptacle and the panel, securing the wire along the way at appropriate intervals.

The new engine control (Vetus SISCO) also arrived, so I enlarged the existing hole in the cockpit (where the old control had been) as needed to fit the new control.  This installation was only temporary, pending installation of the new control cables to the still-absent engine; not shown is the control handle.

In and amongst the jobs above, I made some measurements and did some research for a retractable screen for the forward hatch, information for which the owner had forwarded to me earlier.  After some discussion we decided to order a unit that was a close fit to the space available inside the forward hatch.  I expected it in tomorrow's delivery, after which I'd look at the installation.

Finally, I applied a second coat of varnish to the tiller and inside depthsounder cover.
