Snow Lily | Tuesday, April 2, 2013

Over a few days, I wrapped up the varnish work on the woodstove base cabinet, as well as the doorway to the head.

The engine box required a few additional steps before I could call it complete.  To begin, I milled, sanded, and installed solid cherry fiddle trim around the top edges, which finished off the plywood edge and would hold the cushion in place.  Then, I cut an access hatch in the top, supporting the new hatch with cleats from within, and prepared a square hole in the forward side.  I'd mount the required engine room ventilation fan on the inside, while the hole would accept a cherry grille that was on its way.

I brought the trimmed-out box up to the boat to test its fit, and made some minor adjustments to the aft corner where the angled side met the settee to improve the fit.  Then, back in the shop, I lightly sanded the whole piece to prepare it for its final finishing.

With the time remaining in the day, I permanently installed the woodstove base cabinet, using a number of screws into the adjacent bulkheads and new cleats at the bottom edges.
