I expected my new DA sander to arrive in early afternoon, so to fill the morning I sanded the starboard side of the hull with a random orbit finishing sander and 80-120 grit paper, then with a vibrating palm sander equipped with 120 grit.  The hull was in pretty good shape, but there were a few areas that needed a bit of additional grinding to remove old cracked filler, or where there were minor gouges or chips.  I ground these out with a 2" disc, and then applied a first coat of fairing filler (Quik-Fair, in this instance).

The new tool arrived right at lunchtime, so afterwards I got to work on the port side of the hull and removed the old paint, sanding through 40 and 80 grit paper.
