Bolero Project | Monday, March 24, 2008

The round forward ports came with a 1-1/2" spigot depth, causing them to protrude about 9/16" beyond the cabin trunk on the forward side.  Since this was a bit further than anticipated, the owner requested that I mock them up for a photo session so that we could decide whether we needed to modify the ports or add spacers on the inside to reduce the protrusion, or otherwise how best to proceed.

Here is a series of detailed photos.

In this photo of a boat with a similar forward port shape and design, it appears that the spigot extends roughly 1/4 - 5/16" from the cabin trunk, or about half the distance Bolero's do.  Still, the overall look is quite similar.

I continued work on the main bulkhead.  I began by preparing the 4" and 6" 1708 biaxial fiberglass tape I'd need, precutting the lengths as required and setting them aside for ease of application later.  Then, I cut some strips of 3/8" Corecell foam to fill the gaps left at the topsides portion of the bulkhead, and secured it against movement with a bit of hot glue--just enough to hold it during subsequent steps.  Then, I applied epoxy fillets to both sides, forming a smooth transition between the bulkhead, foam, and hull.

After I let the fillets cure for an hour or so during lunch, I returned and installed the tabbing in all areas, up to the end of the bulkhead beneath the sidedecks.  I removed the masking tape, and left the boat alone for the new fiberglass to cure while I worked on another project in the shop.
